Max Mathews Radio Baton Demonstration
[Recorded: April 7, 2010]
In the late 1950s computer music pioneer Dr. Max Mathews created MUSIC, the first widely used music synthesis program while working in the Acoustic Research Group at Bell Telephone Laboratories. Over the next forty years at Bell Labs and then at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford University, Mathews advanced and refined digital computer music synthesis.
In this video Mathews describes and demonstrates his Radio Baton Controller and Conductor software program and performs brief selections by Bach, Chopin, Beethoven and Appleton.

A Radio Baton is an electronic instrument with two baton controllers and a receiving base called the antenna. In the end of each baton is a small radio transmitter. As the batons are moved over the receiving base, four antennas in the base are able to determine the batons' location in three-dimensional space. The movement of the batons through space are converted into instructions determining how the music is to be synthesized.
The Radio Baton Conductor Model uses the model of an orchestra conductor controlling the musical tempo, dynamics and expression of the piece. The Conductor program puts the pitches and the durations of the notes in a score that the computer reads as a sequence of beats in the computer memory. The conductor can move the batons around with his two hands, controlling six variables, and assign these variables to whatever functions in the music are important at any instant of the music.
When asked if the radio baton was a successful instrument, Mathews answered, "I suspect actually it was too successful. It may have made music too easy to play. But my vision there, and the vision I think I got from John Chowning was that everyone could have his own orchestra and could interpret music according to his particular feelings about it. And that this might be a much more satisfying way than simply sitting and listening to a recording or simply listening to a concert in a concert hall."

It equipped CRT display to simplify the management of music synthesis in realtime, 12bit D/A for realtime sound playback, interface for analog devices (may be CV/Gate interface for modular synthesizers), and even several controllers including musical keyboard, knobs and rotating joysticks, to capture realtime performance.[1][5][2]

Well, I didn't actually expect to actually end up with this. I had a few drinks and was sniped at the last second on eBay for some cuffs! I saw a related item and threw a cheap bid on it, just to do it. Well it ended up winning lol.
Ever wondered where British / MET undercover or more accurately plain-clothes police officers hide their gear to blend in? Under their arms, in many cases. They often use a harness that lets them dangle their communications radio, expandable baton, handcuffs and PAVA or pepper spray within reach, while being concealed by loose-fitting clothing, or a jacket that can be either zipped up or left open for quick access when needed. A truly undercover cop may not even have any equipment on them, but for times when there needs to be a police presence without advertising their presence, kit like this harness comes into play.
Being in the UK, obviously I do not have an expandable baton or the spray that I can put in, nor do I have a radio. But I have handcuffs, can visually illustrate an expandable baton by showing an old wooden one and an antenna to convey the concept and a handy bottle of insect repellent will do the job of being a stand in for the PAVA or pepper spray pouch. To visually illustrate communication equipment I used a RF Bug detector (which has a similar basic appearance as a radio) and an anti-radiation acoustic tube communication system, but with no way to mount it, it was only used on the overview section to show what would be there. You could put a body camera there but it wouldn't point forward, so would be pretty pointless.
To fill up the baton spot and add weight, I put a fenix flashlight in that pouch.
It is quite comfortable, actually. It has velcro loops that you can attach to your belt to prevent the two sides from massively flopping around if you were running or jogging. It is adjustable for how high or low you want the gear riding, depending on torso height of the wearer or to customise based on the kind of clothing being used to conceal the equipment etc.
For me, an absolutely useless item lol. But it was cheap, really excellent condition and something else to do a video on for people who are curious about how most (if not all) covert or undercover police hide their equipment. I have actually seen one in use when two plain clothes officers arrested someone on the street in town a couple years ago. Very cool.
Enjoy.
ps, this did remind me of this part of The Office lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ollBdmG0qhU
